Two promotion battling sides shared the spoils at Hillsborough, as league leaders Sheffield Wednesday were held by Bolton.

Both sides injected impetus straight from the off in this clash, with a thwarted warning shot fired by Bolton and a Barry Bannan shot for the hosts un-phasing the away team. When the game opened up, it was Bolton who were forced to soak up pressure with keeper James Trafford called into action.

Lee Gregory snatched a ball into the area before meeting it with a firm strike from afar, but the strong hands of Trafford prevented Wednesday's attack but not for long.

Despite it taking a vicious deflection, Gregory’s looping effort left Trafford dumbfounded as he looked haplessly on as the ball flew over his head and in.

Sheffield Wednesday continued their attacking prowess as the visitors, with a boisterous following, were forced on the back foot. A unyielding volley from the edge of the area by Will Vaulks drifted into the grateful arms of James Trafford.

Aden Flint raced forward to reach Barry Bannan’s corner, but Trafford’s gloves were warmed once more.

Against the run of play, the visitors drew level with just ten minutes until half time.

Lackadaisical Cameron Dawson couldn’t do much from Bolton’s first shot on target, as Liverpool loanee Connor Bradley slipped through Victor Adeboyejo. The Bolton striker shifted the ball onto his stronger side before firing low into the corner.

A hospital ball back presented the hosts with a golden chance right at the start of the second half. Lee Gregory, venturing for his second of the game, couldn’t knock the ball past James Trafford as he managed to save.

The Owls added more urgency into their game as more neat attacking play forced the visitors to defend. Aden Flint met Will Vaulks’ deep cross via his head, but his nod didn’t trouble the keeper.

Wednesday ended the game as the most potent threat but more resolute Bolton defending, spearheaded by Ricardo Santos, kept the hosts at bay.

The hosts saw a great chance squandered at the very last, which would have chalked up a crucial three points in their pursuit of Championship football. Liam Palmer drove forward with venom and picked out a low cross, but the eventual effort was fired over the bar by Fisayo Dele-Bashiru.
