As a child I spent a lot of time on ferries. Each summer my parents would load the three of us into the back of our Vauxhall and drive us off on a European adventure for a week or three. I loved it. A really early start to the day today as we decided to climb Sigiriya ahead of the crowds and while it was still relatively cool. Rising dramatically from the central plains, the UNESCO-protected ruins of this 5th-century 'Sky Fortress' are one of Sri Lanka's major attractions and an impressive feat of engineering skill.

We set off after a leisurely wander around the town seeing the gentle bustle of the great country. Sri Lanka is a much calmer beast than India, its people are smiling, courteous, helpful and have a wicked sense of humour. At one street food stall we stopped for a vegetable roti (really well spiced and not hot….but with a ‘ball burning’ aubergine chutney to go with it) and fresh coconut milk.

After a good night's sleep breakfast beckoned - more curry, centred around a lovely mild dhaal served with a collection of hot and spicy chutneys, gambols and freshly cooked coconut roti bread...absolutely fabulous!

Those who are expecting a detailed and educational travelogue may benefit from a spoiler alert and warning…….I am not Marcel Proust! Hopefully you will get a flavour of the island, its colours and culture and if there is an occasional laugh or giggle then that is a bonus.
