Proceedings began slowly, with neither side able to generate rhythm into their play as both Blackburn and Sheffield Wednesday were still figuring out each other. Rovers certainly had the lion's share of possession; however, they lacked conviction in the final third of the play.
To the visitors' credit, roared on by a boisterous contingent from Yorkshire, they never allowed any clear-cut chances to harm their abode. Jamal Lowe dug in a deep cross, which should’ve been a bread-and-butter catch for Aynsley Pears; however, it almost resulted in an opener as the keeper was fortunate to retrieve his spillage.
Lowe again was central to another promising Wednesday attack. Down the right side, he drilled a ball into the middle; a touch was crying out, but it evaded a raft of bodies. Wednesday was promising but lacking the clinical touch.
A corner partially cleared fell to Barry Bannan on the edge of the box. The veteran midfielder has done well to hold off his challengers and pick out Liam Cooper in the area. Cooper rose but couldn’t direct his header on target.
The hosts cleaved open the midfield line of Wednesday to have their first chance on goal. Pierce Charles was unfazed as he watched Adam Forshaw’s effort trickle wide of his left post.
This Blackburn chance was a sign of things to come, as soon after Rovers opened the scoring. The Japanese cohort combined from the throw; Ryoyo Morishita found Yuki Ohashi in the area. He was aware and slotted home before a visiting body could thwart the effort. The overall ascendancy fell with Blackburn, and a lead was well merited thus far into the match.
The first chance of the second period fell the way of the visitors. A deft back pass by a Rovers man sent Bailey Cadamarteri away. One-on-one with only Pears to beat, the Blackburn shot-stopper was equal to the strike, outstretching his right leg to deny Wednesday parity.
Ohashi came close on two occasions to doubling Blackburn’s lead. Firstly, he held off Cooper’s challenge to see his shot smothered by Charles, before the Wednesday keeper was there to foil another effort by the Rovers striker.
For the second time this campaign, Blackburn led, until the torrid weather put an end to that. Sour-tasting as they looked comfortable and never looked like relinquishing their lead, potentially halting much-needed progress in their campaign.
