Football Insight: Tranmere Rovers V Bradford City

Both teams are in aid of three points to reclaim their promotion push and have the chance to continue winning ways as Tranmere Rovers travel to fellow play-off candidates, Bradford City tonight.

The ‘Super White Army’ will be looking to build on their 1-0 win over Salford City at the weekend, with Bradford also chalking up an impressive win, defeating Stevenage 3-2.

It promises to be a lively and all-blooded six-pointer promotion in Yorkshire this Valentine's Day.

Top scorers

Andy Cook: Bradford City

Former Tranmere man Andy Cook could have a huge say for Bradford and will want to impress against his former side.

A promotion winner in the National League with Rovers, Cook never got a crack with Tranmere in the Football League and has been impressing since his arrival at the Bantams.

With 15 goals to his name this year, he is on fine form, one that his former counterparts will need to look out for.

Kane Hemmings: Tranmere Rovers

Tranmere's leading scorer with 8 games throughout the season for ‘Rovers’.

After his arrival at Prenton Park from Burton Albion in January 2022, he was slow off the mark but finally hit form, notching up 7 strikes in the run-in to the back-end of last season. He's continued his goal-scoring prowess this season, netting 8 times and has been ever-present for Micky Mellon up-front.

Hemmings' recent form in-front of goal has been partially clinical, netting 4 in Tranmere's last 8 encounters, with his most recent strike a penalty in a 3-2 defeat at the hands of Stockport County – the spot-kick brought the game level at 1-1.

Ones-to-watch

Matt Derbyshire: Bradford City

Bradford’s new signing and vastly experienced player, Matt Derbyshire could be one to look out for after impressing on his debut for Bradford.

After signing for the ‘Bantams’ from Indian Super League side North East United, his return to English Football after a seven-year exile was instantly prodigious, netting the second in Bradford’s 3-2 win over Stevenage on the weekend.

Experienced in the Premier League and Championship, his knowledge will be key for the ‘Bantams’ including tomorrow.

Josh Dacres-Cogley: Tranmere Rovers

A prime example of a player's development at a club is Josh Dacres-Cogley, who’s been instrumental for Tranmere since his arrival from Birmingham City.

Since dropping down from the Championship side, the right-back has been excellent in White and Blue. Effective overlaps, ceaseless runs down the right, dangerous balls and ultimately a key provider for Tranmere 's goal, Dacres-Cogley has been outstanding and has had his praises sung by the crowd throughout the campaign as he keeps a consistent level of form.

A prime example of what he can do, showing his qualities as a higher-up player was the home game against league leaders Leyton Orient. The ultimate creation of the game's winner, Dacres-Cogley left fans waxing lyrical about his ability to look threatening down the right.

Manager Micky Mellon heaped praise on the young defender; he believes he is a valuable asset to the side.

“Fantastic”, he said about Dacres-Cogley. “He's been excellent, he certainly has the quality and potential to move up the league.”

Managers

Mark Hughes (Bradford City)

With managerial experience in abundance, managing Manchester City, Blackburn Rovers and a lengthy spell at Stoke City, Hughes has had huge impetus for his new side.

He joined the ‘Bantams’ towards the tail end of last season while their play-off hopes were beyond reasonable doubt, but a serge towards the Top 7 this season sees a large amount of fans waxing lyrical about their season, as the vastly experienced manager has posed Bradford’s biggest promotion push since they were relegated to the fourth tier.

This is his first job outside the Premier League four years after his last at Southampton, he has shown why the ‘Bantams’ appointed him, as tonight's hosts have a great chance of pushing for promotion.

Micky Mellon (Tranmere Rovers)

Scottish manager Micky Mellon is into his second spell as Tranmere Rovers manager, and is under pressure as a barren run of results.

After leaving Sunny Scotland for the wonderful Wirral in 2021, he was on course to take Tranmere back to League One after being in the promotion places for most of last campaign, but a poor string of results saw Rovers slip out of promotion and even out of the play-offs, ending 9th.

This season was meant to be another push of igniting Tranmere's promotion push and after many topsy turvy runs – 3 wins in 18 games and a 5-game winning streak to name a few – has seen the Super White Army slip into mid-table mediocrity. With an inability to chalk up three points in crucial encounters the pressure is on. However, the league looks compact that three points could see them realistically touching 7th spot, so a run of form is mandatory for Tranmere if their aims are promotion.
