What do you get when you mix Shakespeare's most beloved comedy with four supremely talented actors, a gorgeous Yorkshire garden, and a healthy dose of British weather? The result was nothing short of pure theatrical magic. The Three Inch Fools' triumphant production of A Midsummer Night's Dream at Ripon's Old Deanery garden proved that when it comes to outdoor theatre, this company simply can't be Bottom-ed.

Celebrating their tenth anniversary in style, The Three Inch Fools delivered a performance that was quintessentially English in all the right ways. Against the enchanting backdrop of the Old Deanery's twinkling gardens, audiences wrapped in anoraks and cagoules clutched their picnics and drinks, utterly spell-bound by what unfolded before them. When the heavens opened mid-performance, not even the British weather could dampen spirits—if anything, it added to the authentic outdoor experience that made this production so thoroughly dream-y.

Peter Long, Sam Waites, Erica Flint, and Grace Lilley formed a quartet of theatrical dynamos, generating enough energy and electricity to power Ripon for a week. Had lightning actually struck during their performance, the flash would have been positively shocking—these four were already providing all the sparks needed. Their comedic timing echoed the best of British comedy, channelling everyone from Morecambe and Wise to The League of Gentlemen, with monologues that would make Yes Prime Minister proud.

The company's signature style – fast-paced, musically-driven theatre with lightning-quick costume changes and shameless multi-rolling – was on full display. Watching the actors change from lovers to mechanicals to fairies (sometimes all in the space of a single scene) was like witnessing a theatrical relay race where everyone's a winner. The physical comedy was particularly inspiring with more slapping, jumping, and general mayhem than you could shake a stick at.

What truly set this production apart was its brilliant script, peppered with bon mots that had the audience in stitches. The cast's quick wit and perfectly timed ad-libs turned Shakespeare's already hilarious comedy into something even more Puck-ishly entertaining. Their ability to play with innuendos while maintaining the Bard's poetic beauty showed a mastery that was nothing short of genius.

The natural amphitheatre of the Old Deanery gardens proved as vibrant as the production itself. Even as the rain came down, it did not interrupt the Dream, the show went on—a testament to both the performers' professionalism and the audience's dedication. After all, what's a midsummer night without a little atmospheric moisture? It only added to the enchanted forest feel that made this production so immersive.

From a cleverly staged dramatic river plunge, fun with a wall, to delicate fairy business, from the bottom line to the top tier of comedy, The Three Inch Fools proved once again why they're one of Britain's most innovative touring companies. Their tenth anniversary celebration was a gift to audiences and another triumph for the Ripon Theatre Festival.

As the Bard himself might say, though love never did run smooth, this production ran smoother than silk. The Three Inch Fools have crafted something truly special—a Midsummer Night's Dream that's both faithful to Shakespeare's vision and refreshingly contemporary in its execution.

Don't let this dream slip away—if The Three Inch Fools are performing near you, it's an experience that's absolutely fairy wonderful.
