Two Yorkshire lawyers have set off on the ‘World’s Toughest Row’, a 3,000-mile unsupported Atlantic crossing from La Gomera in the Canary Islands to Antigua, in aid of two much-loved regional charities.
David Knaggs and Richard Larking, racing as Greens2Blue, began their Atlantic attempt on 14 December after months of intensive preparation. They have already raised more than £160,000 for Maggie’s Home of Cancer Care and Friends of Alfie Martin, and hope to reach £200,000, which is £60 for every mile rowed.
The pair, aged 59 and 60, are among the oldest teams in this year’s fleet of 40 boats. Their ocean voyage will include 40-foot waves, sleep deprivation and hazardous shipping lanes, as they row in relentless two-hour shifts for an expected 45–55 days at sea.
Training for the extreme challenge has included nearly 200 hours of open-water rowing in the North Sea.
David said: “This challenge began as an idea on a golf course three years ago. After months of training and fundraising, it’s surreal but incredibly exciting that we are finally on the start line.”
Richard added: “Setting off just after David’s 60th birthday makes this feel even more momentous. We’re hugely grateful to our families, friends and everyone who has supported us.”

Also backed by sponsorship from some 20 businesses, the team’s headline sponsor is Begbies Traynor Group. Julian Pitts, the firm’s national managing partner for restructuring, said: “We’re really proud to stand behind David and Richard. Their commitment is inspiring, and we’ll be following their progress with real excitement and pride.”
