Yorkshire Artist Kitty North – Her Exhibition At Salts Mill

Paintings by Kitty North, 20 years in the making, have gone on show in Gallery 2.

Twenty years ago, Kitty North began to paint the sixteen 6ft x 5ft oil paintings at the heart of her new exhibition. This summer she felt they were finally finished.

Powerful and imposing yet intimate and inviting too, these canvasses are inspired by the rural Yorkshire landscape in which North lives and works. They are paintings with visceral qualities in which one can immerse oneself: peaks and villages, Dales and farmhouses, swirling skies, shining suns, tiny humans making monumental efforts.

Kitty North says:
“There’s a very clear start and end to certain images; a response to a particular place, day, moment in nature, capturing the changing weather and seasons. But with these huge oil paintings, it’s completely different. When I stand back and look at them, I can feel the two decades that it took me to create them: the layers of paint, the passage of time, building on the canvas. They have a real weight to them.”

Medium and smaller oils from throughout North’s career will also be on show elsewhere in the gallery.

North adds:
“In the more recent paintings, I’m also using acrylics, as well as oil, watercolour, and charcoal. Watercolours and charcoals are predominantly drawn directly from life. I love to be outside in the village recording whatever comes across the village green, or up on a hillside feeling the elements and trying to translate them into paint.”

Continuum, an exhibition of paintings by Kitty North, opened in Gallery 2 at Salts Mill on Thursday September 21st, 2023 and runs until 14th April 2024.

The accompanying catalogue, Continuum, has an introduction by the writer and critic Andrew Lambirth.
