With all football leagues now in swing, the year is becoming filled with action to take in from across the world of sport.

For a guide in what is on offer this midweek look no further than this as we have ana array of Yorkshire sides back in action looking to make this week a positive one.

Monday 18th August Premier League: Leeds United v Everton 20:00

The maiden round of the 2025/26 Premier League season ends on Monday with Elland Road playing host to newly promoted Leeds United against Everton.

Leeds finished as champions in the second tier last season with 100 points, which signalled their return to the top flight after two seasons away. The Peacocks have been busy in the transfer market with a raft of signings, including the acquisition of proven Premier League talent in Sean Longstaff and Dominic Calvert-Lewin.

While signings have been coming in, many fans have been more expectant when it comes to incomings with a famously difficult season in the Premier League awaiting them. Their pre-season has been consistent, with no losses and three respectable draws to Manchester United, Villarreal and AC Milan.

The last time Leeds entered the top flight was under the stewardship of Marcelo Bielsa, who ended his time as a legend in West Yorkshire; this time it is Daniel Farke who is in the dugout, which has left some critics flustered over his credentials at this level, with his last two attempts ending in relegation at Norwich City.

Everton are also a side familiar with the troubles of the Premier League, as over recent seasons they have battled with the drop amid points deductions. Now reunited with David Moyes as manager, it seems the good times have also returned, as the Toffees finished far from the relegation zone in 13th place.

Now in pastures new at the Hill Dickinson Stadium, the future does look bright for Everton, especially with statement signings such as Jack Grealish on loan and Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall in their arsenal.

Moyes will be hoping that their league campaign ends up better than their preseason, in which they were winless in six matches. The recent record between the two does favour the Toffees, though, as they have only lost one of the last 11 meetings between the two.

A win for either would quell the nerves of the fanbases and instil some belief into the club.

A loss could sow the seeds of doubt or give cause for more incomings as we near the end of the transfer window.

Tuesday 19th August EFL League One Huddersfield Town v Doncaster Rovers 19:45

Round four of League One sees a Yorkshire derby at the John Smiths Stadium where promotion hopefuls Huddersfield host newly promoted Doncaster Rovers.

This is the Terriers' second season in the third division following their relegation from the Championship, and so far it has been a far from fruitful experience. Last season had hopes of success with an early run in the playoff spots, but a disastrous end to the season meant a 10th-place finish in the end and the end of Michael Duff’s time in charge.

Lee Grant has since taken the helm, and the ex-goalkeeper has won two from three league matches with a 3-0 win over Leyton Orient and a 2-0 victory against Reading prior to their first loss of the season in a 3-2 away defeat to Blackpool.

Six points from three games has them just outside the playoffs in seventh spot, which will have to improve over the course of the season if the Terriers fans are to believe in the project of inexperienced manager Grant.

The improvement could come against Grant McCann’s Doncaster, who have made a positive start to life back in League One. Doncaster finished as League Two champions on 84 points and have taken to life well in a harder division with an unbeaten start.

Their first game back was a home win over Exeter, which was followed by a first away victory to Mansfield in a comeback 2-1 win. The only blip has been a 1-1 draw to Wycombe, who finished in the League One playoffs last campaign.

The signs are all pointing in the right direction for Rovers, who will be hoping to cement themselves in the third tier. If things align as they have over the course of the season for both, there could be shocks on the way on both ends of the spectrum in Yorkshire this season.

Wednesday 20th August Enterprise National League: Southend v York City 19:45

We are already in the third matchday of the National League season, and while it is early days, we have a clash between two sides in the top seven who will already be looking at ways to ascend into the Football League.

Southend are ruling the roost thus far with two matches played and two victories, with an opening day 3-0 battering over Gateshead followed by another clean sheet in a 2-0 home win over Tamworth.

The Shrimpers will be looking to take one step further than their playoff final defeat to Oldham last season after finishing in the final playoffspot. Thus far they seem to have the credentials to do so with an early flurry of impressive performances.

Standing in their way this week is York City, another side looking to once again find themselves in the hunt for promotion. With the ruthless nature of the National League and the single automatic promotion spot, it was York last year that had the unwanted title of finishing runners-up and still staying put.

The Minster Men finished on 96 points last year but were dumped out of the playoffs in the semi-final by eventual winners Oldham and now have to face familiar faces and new foes in an attempt to at least replicate a top-six finish.

Thus far it has gone relatively well with a home draw on opening day to Sutton followed by a 2-0 away win over Truro City. That record has them in seventh at the early stages, but with much tougher opposition waiting, it could either be the first blip in a long season ahead or cause for optimism in the hunt for another Yorkshire side in the football league.

Thursday 21st August Betfred Super League: Leeds Rhinos v Hull KR 20:00

There is another all-Yorkshire affair this time in the Super League as Leeds host Hull KR at Headingley Stadium.

The Robins travel from the East Riding with hopes of extending their impressive season and points gap at the top of the league. With 22 matches played, Hull have a six-point buffer over Wigan Warriors in second and have won their last four matches on the spin, with their latest being a crucial, closely fought 10-6 win away at the Warriors, which has given them the breathing space at the top for the first time this year.

The Rhinos had a much easier affair in their last match when they faced off with bitter rivals Castleford Tigers at Wheldon Road. The final score was a staggering 64-6 with a brace each for veteran Ryan Hall and Ash Handley as well as nine different try scorers in total. The victory lifted the Rhinos above the Leigh Leopards, who suffered a close loss to Hull FC, and into third place, just two points away from the automatic playoff semi-final spots.

This will be the third time the two have met this season, with the first being in late March, in which late Batchelor and Lewis tried to secure a 20-14 away win for the Robins. The reverse fixture in June saw revenge for Leeds, who came from 8-0 down at half-time to 14-8 and handed Hull just their second loss of the season to that point.

From then the Robins have only lost once more, while Leeds have had their slip-ups against Wakefield and Saints. The Robins will be favourites to keep their push for the league leaders' shield going, but a win for the Rhinos would not only get them closer to the top two but also build momentum for a playoff charge.
