The Big Moon, Walking Like We Do (Fiction)

With the singles charts being full of female solo singers here is an album from an all female band. That's where any comparisons with their peers end as this is an album that stands out from anything else in the album or singles charts.

The Big Moon had their debut album nominated for the Mercury Music prize. Now the band are back with a slightly more polished album. The songs are in the same vein as groups such as Blur or Pulp these days.

Your Light is probably the best track on the album where vocalist and main songwriter Juliette Jackson delivers a harmonised track that is as much infectious as it is intriguing.

Dog Eat Dog is a ballad that has a lyric that seems to be about their hometown of London and the streets not being paved with gold. In a way it sounds old fashioned but if you heard the track 25 years ago it would have fit in perfectly.

Why is about a trip to the seaside and has that Englishness about it that does recall Blur or even going further back, The Kinks. It is a haunting track that has a delicate melody that is not ruined by being over produced.

I rate the album 3 out of 5

Don't Think runs along on a nagging bass line that brings to mind Blondie in their disco period albeit in the hands of The Big Moon.

It is a shame that Later With Jools is not currently showing on BBC2 as The Big Moon would have been perfect for the show. Perhaps it is time you discovered The Big Moon.
