Silver Screen Weekly - What's Coming Up At The Cinema From Friday 6 October 2023

Our film critic and media correspondent has been looking and trawling the new releases. Here's what you can see on the big screen this week.

From Friday 6th October

The Exorcist: Believer (15)
50 Years Ago...one film changed the horror landscape. Now, prepare yourselves for a return to the evil. This legacy sequel from David Gordon Green (Halloween trilogy) sees two young girls go missing unexplainably, and upon their return, something is very very wrong, as a great darkness seems to take them both over, something demonic, leaving the parents desperate for a solution, so desperate in fact they seek out Chris MacNeil (original star Ellen Burstyn) for help, as she is brought face to face with evil again. A follow-up to one of the greatest and most enduring horror films ever made, The Exorcist: Believer is set to kick start a whole new era in the legacy of the late great William Friedkin’s 1973 masterpiece, and with the return of the legendary Oscar winner Burstyn at the centre of the story, alongside Leslie Odom Jr., Jennifer Nettles and young stars Olivia O'Neill and Lidya Jewett, this is one of the cinema events of the year. Something wicked this way comes...and you don't want to miss this story about the power of belief and the tribute to one hell of big screen classic. The Body and the Blood is set to be frozen in fear!

The Great Escaper (12a)
Director Oliver Parker’s true story inspired drama could well be one of the most moving and inspiring films of the year. Based on the story of Bernard Jordan, a WWII veteran who “broke out” of his nursing home in 2014 to escape to France for the 70th anniversary D-Day celebrations, The Great Escaper stars Michael Caine in the lead role, alongside the late great Glenda Jackson in her final film role. Being hailed as a poignant and superbly acted triumph of the human spirit, past and present, The Great Escaper is a film that will speak to so many and marks a fitting final film in the career of Glenda Jackson, as well as another late career highlight in Caine’s remarkable body of work over his 70+ year career.
