Silver Screen Weekly - What's Coming Up At The Cinema From Friday 4th August 2023

Our film critic and media correspondent has been looking and trawling the new releases. Here's what you can see on the big screen this week.

From Friday 4th August

Meg 2: The Trench (12a)
The Meg is back, bigger and better! Jason Statham returns for this shark action thriller sequel to the 2018 hit, again based on the work of Steve Alten. This time British director Ben Wheatley takes over the directorial reigns for this sequel that goes even crazier with the material. As more megalodons are unleashed and three scientists must outsmart (and out swim) these prehistoric apex predators for the sake of survival. Taking the set pieces, action and comedy of the first film and amplifying it 100%, Meg 2: The Trench is a gargantuan summer treat, that looks to deliver plenty of bang - or rather bite - for your buck! Just when you thought it was safe to go back in the water, the Meg is back!

Joyride (15)
From the co-writers of Family Guy and the producers of Blockers, Joyride is a film that some are calling this generation’s The Hangover sized comedy breakout. The film follows four Asian American friends (Ashley Park, Sherry Cola, Stephanie Hsu, and Sabrina Wu) as they travel through China looking for one of their birth mothers and in the process discover the strengths of their bond and who they are. Critics have hailed director Adele Lim’s directorial debut as raunchy, gross out and hilarious, and yet sweet and heartfelt, bolstered by terrific performances. A comedy well worth going on a trip to discover!
