Silver Screen Weekly - What's Coming Up At The Cinema From Friday 22nd December 2023

Our film critic and media correspondent has been looking and trawling the new releases. Here's what you can see on the big screen this week.

Now Showing

Aquaman and The Lost Kingdom (12a)
Jason Momoa is back in Aquaman and The Lost Kingdom, this Christmas' biggest blockbuster. Arthur Curry (Momoa) is settling into his life as a father, as well as a King and hero, but when the vengeful Black Manta (Yahya Abdul-Mateen II) seeks to destroy everything Arthur holds dear by harnessing an ancient evil, Arthur has to make some unlikely alliances to save the world, the seven seas, and his family. This is the final film in the DC Extended Universe, and a sequel to the 2018 box office smash, The Lost Kingdom is a visually astounding, emotional and wild sequel from director James Wan, co-starring Patrick Wilson, Nicole Kidman, Amber Heard, Temuera Morrison and Dolph Lundgren. A celebration of the character and a grand climax to the DC world as we know it, Aquaman and The Lost Kingdom is a high stakes feast of inventive action, character-driven storytelling and might be the dark horse for the best comic book film of 2023.

From Tuesday 26th December

Anyone But You (15)
Starring Glenn Powell and Sydney Sweeney, Anyone But You sees two people whose relationship massively sours after their perfect first date. However, when both are invited to a destination wedding, they agree to pretend and be the perfect couple to keep up appearances. Funny, rude and very cheeky (in more ways than one), this is the perfect cinema evening watch for those couples out there who want to revel in the romance, as well as the chaos, that is love…And have a mighty chuckle too, this festive season.

The Boy and The Heron
Animated fantasy film from the legendary Studio Ghibli, based on the 1937 novel by Genzaburō Yoshino, that sees a boy - during the Pacific War - discover an abandoned tower in his new town, after his mother’s death, whereby he finds a talking Heron. Critically hailed as another animated masterpiece from the beloved studio and the equally iconic filmmaker Hayao Miyazaki, The Boy and The Heron is a triumph of soulful storytelling and imagination, and another piece of Japanese cinema of late that is set to capture the very heart of the wider world. The English dubbed version features a reliably heavyweight cast that includes Robert Pattinson, Luca Padovan, Christian Bale, Mark Hamill, Florence Pugh, Willem Dafoe and Dave Bautista.
