Silver Screen Weekly - What's Coming Up At The Cinema From Friday 21st July 2023

Our film critic and media correspondent has been looking and trawling the new releases. Here's what you can see on the big screen this week.

From Friday 21st July

Oppenheimer (15)

From one of our greatest modern day filmmakers Christopher Nolan (The Dark Knight Trilogy, Inception, Dunkirk) comes this biographical epic based in part on the autobiography by Kai Bird and Martin J. Sherwin, and on the life of J. Robert Oppenheimer, the theoretical physicist who developed the first nuclear weapons on the Manhattan Project. This film stars Cillian Murphy as Oppenheimer, as he develops the atomic bomb, dealing with the stresses, pressures and aftermath of his world changing work and the lives it would impact. Co-starring an incredible cast that includes, Emily Blunt, Matt Damon, Robert Downey Jr., Florence Pugh, Josh Hartnett, Casey Affleck, Rami Malek, Kenneth Branagh, Benny Safdie, Dane DeHaan, Alden Ehrenreich, and Gary Oldman, and many more! Oppenheimer is set to be one of the most riveting, soul shaking, cinematic experiences of the year, and early reviews have hailed it as Christopher Nolan’s greatest film in nigh on 15 years, which covers some serious ground!

Barbie (12a)
Life in plastic, has never been more fantastic! As this big screen adaptation of the legendary Mattel toy sensation, sees Barbie (Margot Robbie) and Ken (Ryan Gosling) living their best life in Barbie Land alongside all the other Barbies and Kens but one day these two get the chance to venture into the human world, discovering its joys - and dangers - in the process. From one of our most exciting filmmakers, in the acclaimed and Oscar nominated writer/director Greta Gerwig (Ladybird and Little Women), and co-written by revered filmmaker/writer Noah Baumbach (Marriage Story), Barbie is set to be one of the most fun, crazy and joyous films of the summer! Co-starring an incredible cast that includes, America Ferrera, Simu Liu, Kate McKinnon, Issa Rae, Rhea Perlman, Will Ferrell, John Cena, Dua Lipa, Michael Cera and Helen Mirren, among others, this really is a Barbie that makes you want to go party!
