Silver Screen Weekly - What's Coming Up At The Cinema From Friday 18th August 2023

Our film critic and media correspondent has been looking and trawling the new releases. Here's what you can see on the big screen this week.

From Friday 18th August

Blue Beetle (12a)
Cobra Kai's Xolo Maridueña is Jaime Reyes in this exciting and important new film, which brings DC Comics’ Latino hero triumphantly to the big screen with heart, laughs and tonnes of visually astonishing action. The film sees the young college graduate chosen by a blue alien scarab, which gifts him powers that are only limited by his imagination, but why did this alien device choose him? All will become clear, when he goes on a journey battling evil corporate power hungry forces, saving the world, and saving his family. Reviews have hailed Blue Beetle as a poignant, incredible and fun start for a fresh and important new superhero for DC, and a film you have to see on the big screen! Co-starring Susan Sarandon, Bruna Marquezine, Adriana Barraza, Damián Alcázar, Raoul Max Trujillo, and George Lopez.

Strays (15)
From the devious minds that brought us TED, 21 Jump Street and Cocaine Bear comes the comedy of the summer in Strays. The film tells the story or lovable dog Reggie (voiced by Will Ferrell), whose deadbeat owner does not appreciate all the love he gives him, and when one day he is successful and dumping Reggie, he makes a few doggie friends, and together these strays decide enough is enough and it is time for this human to pay! A high concept, hilarious and heartwarming adult comedy, Strays delivers on its every promise and has a bite as strong as its bark. Co-starring Jamie Foxx, Will Forte and Isla Fisher.

From Wednesday 23rd August

The Blackening (15)
This new horror comedy looks set to be one of the hidden gems of the summer, as director Tim Story’s brutal but hilarious film gathers a group of black friends on a weekend getaway, only to find themselves trapped in a cabin with a bloodthirsty masked killer and engaged in a - somewhat inappropriate - game of death! With biting social satire, send ups of horror tropes and all manner of memorable laughs and indeed frights, The Blackening is a delightfully dark horror comedy which knows how to have fun, as well as make a razor sharp point.
