Silver Screen Weekly - What's Coming Up At The Cinema From Friday 12th January 2024

Our film critic and media correspondent has been looking and trawling the new releases. Here's what you can see on the big screen this week.

From Friday 12th January

The Beekeeper (15)
From director David Ayer (Suicide Squad, End of Watch) comes this exhilarating action thriller starring Jason Statham as Adam Clay, who goes on a brutal pursuit of vengeance, when a friend of his is destroyed by a horrible National Stakes con, but as he takes on this nefarious company, they soon find Clay is a former operative of an organisation known as 'The Beekeepers'. Needless to say, they messed with the wrong guy! Co-starring, Emmy Raver-Lampman, Josh Hutcherson, Bobby Naderi, Minnie Driver, Phylicia Rashad and Jeremy Irons. The Beekeeper is a big screen thriller with real life sting, that is being called "one of the best action movies with Jason Statham" by critics.

The Boys in the Boat (12a)
Director George Clooney’s latest film adapts Daniel James Brown’s non-fiction novel for the big screen in this inspiring true story, The Boys in the Boat. Telling the underdog story of the University of Washington’s rowing team’s bid to represent the US at the 1936 Summer Olympics in Berlin. Starring Callum Turner and Joel Edgerton, this uplifting story is one of good old fashioned triumph and crowd pleasing sports drama thrills.

Poor Things (18)
Based on Alasdair Gray’s 1992 novel, director Yorgos Lanthimos’ (The Lobster, The Favourite) latest film, just might be his greatest work yet. This aesthetically stunning science fantasy black comedy is set in Victorian era London, as Bella Baxter (Emma Stone) is resurrected following her suicide, whereby she runs off with a debauched lawyer embarking on a whole new life - quite literally - of discovery and sexual liberation. Visually inventive, thematically rich, and a bold and challenging work of cinematic vision, Poor Things is critically acclaimed and already an awards season frontrunner, recently winning two Golden Globes. Co-starring Willem Dafoe and Mark Ruffalo.

From Wednesday 17th January

Mean Girls (12a)
Mark Waters’ revered 2004 comedy is given a musical update, in this movie adaptation of Tina Fey, Jeff Richmond and Nell Benjamin’s stage musical based on the film. Tina Fey returns to co-write this big screen adaptation, under the helm of directors Samantha Jayne and Arturo Perez Jr. Mean Girls sees a naive teenager navigate the complex world of high school power dynamics and social groups, in this musical treat for fans of the source material, the musical that followed and newcomers alike. The film stars Angourie Rice, Reneé Rapp, Auliʻi Cravalho, Christopher Briney, Tina Fey and Jon Hamm.
