Revealed: The UK's Favourite Rom-Coms For Valentine’s Day

As Valentine’s Day approaches and many loved-up couples intend to wrap up the evening in front of the TV, a new study has revealed which rom-coms we are most likely to be watching.

Online casino comparison service KingCasinoBonus.uk used Google’s Keyword Planner to find the number of monthly Google searches for 180 romantic comedies, which were paired with search terms such as ‘watch [movie name]’ or ‘how to watch [movie name]’ in order to find the UK’s favourites.

In first place is the 1999 classic, 10 Things I Hate About You. The movie, which has gained cult status in recent years thanks to its iconic soundtrack and storyline inspired by Shakespeare’s ‘Taming of the Shrew,’ was the resounding favourite, receiving 73,423 searches per month on average.

The story follows high-schooler Cameron (Joseph Gordon-Levitt), who falls in love with classmate Bianca but is forbidden from dating her until her strong-willed older sister, Kat (Julia Stiles), also finds a boyfriend. In an attempt to speed the process up, Cameron pays high school bad boy Patrick (Heath Ledger) to date Kat in a bid to see Bianca, yielding some interesting results.

The film, which is currently available to stream on Disney+, became an unexpected hit with Gen Z thanks to its 90s aesthetic, iconic soundtrack and strong feminist message, which may explain why it is the most popular ahead of Valentine’s Day.

Crazy, Stupid, Love was found to be the UK’s second favourite rom-com, with 62,865 searches per month on average. Featuring famous faces including Steve Carell, Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone, the film follows Cal, who learns to pick up women under the guidance of his new friend Jacob, after his wife asks for a divorce.

The UK’s third most popular film, 500 Days of Summer, starring Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Zooey Deschanel, is searched 34,173 times per month on average. The film follows hopeless romantic Tom, who reflects on the past 500 days he spent with his girlfriend, Summer, after a seemingly unexpected breakup.

In fourth place was the 1994 release Four Weddings and a Funeral with 33,325 searches, closely followed by the Nora Ephron classic When Harry Met Sally, which received 32,351 searches per month.

In addition to uncovering the most searched for rom-coms nationwide, the data also looked at the top picks in different UK towns and cities.

While most cities preferred 10 Things I Hate About You, Manchester, Salford, and St Albans’ preferred rom-com was found to be Crazy, Stupid, Love.

Interestingly, Glasgow, Edinburgh and Belfast were most favourable of When Harry Met Sally, famed for its “I’ll have what she’s having” cafe scene with Meg Ryan.

Bucking national trends, residents in Carlisle and Sunderland were found to have Muriel’s Wedding among their top five rom-com favourites. Other movies that made the top five in some places included The Wedding Singer, fourth-favourite for those in Inverness and Coming to America, which was fifth most popular in Stoke-on-Trent.
