This coming weekend members of Blackburn Diocese Mothers’ Union from across Lancashire are holding an all-age local celebration and a special service - all to mark the 150th anniversary of the worldwide organisation.

On Saturday (August 8) members will gather at Blackburn Cathedral for an exhibition showcasing the work of the Mothers’ Union in the County, nationally and worldwide as they continue to seek to put their faith into action.

This event is open to anyone and runs from 10am to 4pm, including the special service. All welcome! There will also be lots of activities for children (accompanied by an adult) taking place in the Crypt.
During the day there will be the display of around 50 deanery and branch banners. Some are the banners are very old, while others are quite modern; all are splendid examples of the skill and vision of those who designed and made them.

Exhibits will also draw attention to the campaigns taken up by the Mothers' Union to raise awareness of domestic abuse and modern-day slavery whilst others will provide examples of the outreach work undertaken to support hospitals, prisons and refuges.

The day will reach a conclusion with a service beginning at 2pm, to remember and give thanks for the founder Mary Sumner and her legacy today. This will be led by Rt Rev Philip North, Bishop of Blackburn.

The Lord Lieutenant of Lancashire is also attending the service along with the Mayor and Mayoress of Blackburn with Darwen and the York Provincial Mothers’ Union President.

Anyone interested in attending any part of the day is welcome and new members of the Mother's Union are also encouraged - just ask when you are there for more information about joining!

“The 150th anniversary gives us an opportunity to reflect with gratitude on the dedication of generations of members who have helped the Mothers’ Union become the worldwide and local movement it is today.”

Bishop Philip added: “It is a real joy and privilege to be able to lead the service on August 8 as we celebrate 150 years of the Mothers’ Union.

"Throughout those years, generations of faithful members have quietly and steadfastly served Christ by serving others – offering friendship, support and hope in communities here in Lancashire and around the world.

“As we give thanks for the vision of Mary Sumner and her enduring legacy, we also look forward with confidence and hope. The Mothers’ Union continues to be a living witness to God’s love and I give thanks for all it has contributed to the life of the Church."
