When James Morrison released his debut album,
Undiscovered, in 2006, it hit the number one slot and began the start of a successful career. His songs have become radio favourites with their timeless quality blending melody and classic songwriting.
Following a six-year absence since the release of his last album, Morrison is back again with the release of a new record –
Fight Another Day. The title of the new album comes after a period of reflection and therapy, with the songs dealing with his own personal struggles.
The mood, however, was more jubilant as the singer arrived on stage at the Bridgwater Hall in Manchester – the atmosphere felt like Morrison had never been away. The tour harks back to a more simplistic setting: the lighting was sympathetic, the stage set minimal, and the band in the background with the power of his songwriting centre stage. If this was an exercise in easing him back into the limelight, it worked superbly.
His fanbase now includes twenty-somethings whose parents enjoyed his earlier recordings. Introducing the new songs comfortably into the set,
Cry Your Tears and
Fight Another Day blended effortlessly with
You Make It Real and
Undiscovered – standards that have become part of pop music's rich tapestry over the last twenty years.
Broken Strings, one of his biggest hits, was performed with his daughter Elsie; the duet worked to a point – their contrasting vocals might have worked better together harmonising.
There were still more aces to play with, with
You Give Me Something and naturally
Wonderful World rounding off this highly successful return. If Morrison had any doubts about his resurgence, they had been misplaced with a performance that had been a winner all the way.
