Is Life A Beach At Beach House, Blackpool?

Beach House Bistro and Bar has stood resplendent on the seafront under Blackpool Tower for a number of years. I must have walked past it many times, but somehow it didn’t really register. The grey, concrete structure does not really catch the eye.

On a summer's day you can sit outside on the south facing terrace, but this is autumn - the Irish Sea looks to have more twists and turns than Boris’ pandemic decisions, and the wind has more clout in it than any answer given at the Prime Minister's Press Conferences.

Hand sanitiser was available as we arrived at the bistro, and the QR code for track and trace was clearly visible.

If you can, try to get a table that is in the second half of the bistro, as you are looking out over the Irish Sea with the North Pier to your right. The retractable roof will be ideal in summer, but for now they have heaters strategically placed.

There is a large cocktail bar in the first half, an empty DJ deck sits alongside, which left the impression that if you were to visit in 'normal' times, it might seem later in the evening, more like you are in San Antonio in Ibiza than Blackpool.

As you might expect, the cocktail and drinks menu is probably bigger than the food menu. I opted for the Virgin Pina Colada - a mix of coconut cream and pineapple juice. A very refreshing start whilst we waited for our mains to arrive.

Ranging from the Veggie Wrap at £10.00 you have choices such as Pastrami Burgers, Seafood Tagliatelle and fillet steaks, with salads and pizza in between.

I chose the 8oz fillet steak at £28.00 plus an extra £4.00 for fries. It might seem a tad expensive for Blackpool, but then again, you do not get this view from everywhere in Blackpool. Cooked to my preference, (well done) it did not disappoint.

My partner decided upon the Beer Battered Fish and Chips, which came with mushy peas, home made tartare sauce and hand cut chunky chips. It felt like one of those times when you wished you had chosen that dish, as it smelt delicious. The verdict was that it was excellent.

There isn’t really much choice for desserts with just three options, ranging from ice cream to deconstructed honey cheesecake, so we did not partake.

By now, the table behind us was starting to get busy, with more people coming in from outside to witness a wedding proposal apparently - the rule of six was suddenly drowned in the Irish Sea - so we grabbed our belongings, informed the head waitress what was going on, and said our goodbyes.

Hopefully, if we visit again, we will not have to leave at such speed as we enjoyed the experience, the food was good and the views pleasing - (the windows could do with a good clean but I reckon they are facing a losing battle). We both got the impression that some of the staff could do with being more customer focussed, as the ratio of service given, and prices charged, does not match up.

Perhaps they think they do not have to try, as there isn't a huge regular clientele, just a lot of holiday makers eating. Get that right and they will be standing as tall and proud as Blackpool Tower.
