In conversation: Indie Pop BFF

Australia’s breakout indie pop BFFs, Betty Taylor, have just released their highly anticipated and infectious new single, Sucker Punch, on November 5th via Hello Gardener/ Pals. The band’s homegrown and international success and acclaim in the US and UK has led to extensive touring, festival slots and over 3 million streams and counting! Sucker Punch, co-written with renowned Australian producer Robby De Sa (grentperez, The Veronicas, Blusher), is a sun-soaked, heart-thumping dose of indie-dream-pop made for falling in love when you least expect it. We caught up with Sophie from the band as they hit the road to promote the new single.

Hi, how are you?

Thank you so much for asking! I am so good!

We are so excited about your new single release... tell us the story behind it...

Thank you, I am also very excited; it feels like we've been sitting on this gem forever, and I'm so happy for it to find its way into the world! I wrote this song back in February 2024, can you believe it?! I had just sworn off ever dating ever again; I got through the sad, hard parts of being single and feeling lonely. I had found a true sense of happiness in my own company, only to have the universe throw a spanner into the works: the man of my dreams. I wrote this song just as I was releasing "Oh crap, I'm really falling for this person. Here we go again, I guess, jumping back into the dating deep end."

And what is your key ambition?

I'm really proud of this track. It feels like a step up for us, and I'm so excited for people to enter this next chapter with us, but also we really want to cast our net wide and reach new fans and bring those people into our circle.

We want to get to know a little more about your musical taste. Tell us a song & artist (and a reason) that makes you:

Smile:
Blink 182 – Rockshow: My now partner and I saw Blink 182 live when we first started dating, and he later told me that's where he "fell in love with the girl at the rock show".

Cry: Angie McMahon - Letting Go: I remember bawling my eyes out in the car the first time I heard this track. I was really going through it, and it made me feel like everything was going to be okay.

Laugh: Nobody's Son – Sabrina Carpenter; we love a sarcastic queen.

Feel nostalgic: Tongue Tied - Grouplove; this song felt nostalgic the minute it came out. But I do have an amazing memory of seeing Grouplove live at my first ever festival, which happened to be the last ever Big Day Out.

Dance in the kitchen: Thirst Trap - Audrey Hobert; Honestly, I will shake ass to her entire album, even the ones that are relatable in a devastating way.

Sing in the shower: I repeat; anything by Audrey Hobert.

Message a friend immediately: anything by Taylor Swift. I must contact my bestie; we must dissect lyrics, giggle and scream.

What was the best gig you have ever been to?
Seeing Genesis Owusu live for the first time. I didn't know what to expect, and the entire time I was so captivated and enthralled by his performance. That man is an ARTist.

What is the best show you have ever done?

By far my favourite show personally was at the back end of last year on our Young Dumb Immature EP tour. This was our biggest headline tour at home in Aus, and the Brisbane crowd did not disappoint. Those guys were screaming every word, and at the end of the show the room was so loud and cheering so much I started bawling my eyes out on stage. I was just so grateful for that moment.

What stage have you not performed on that you dream of?

Main Stage Glastonbury

Lastly, you can achieve one thing by the end of the year; what is it?

Finishing every Sarah J. Maas book/series

Tour dates are as follows:

NOVEMBER
Tues 11th MANCHESTER - The Deaf Institute: The Lodge
Fri 14th NEWCASTLE - Zerox
Sat 15th LEEDS - Live at Leeds In The City
Sun 16th SHEFFIELD - Yellow Arch Studios
