Hydes Doubles Apprentice Intake Amid National Training Push

Salford-based brewer Hydes has doubled its apprentice intake as it marks National Apprenticeship Week (9–15 February).

Following a year of successful growth in 2025, Hydes is placing vocational training at the heart of its 2026 growth strategy. This new approach aligns with national efforts to bridge the skills gap through practical, on-the-job learning, supported by the government’s expansion of the apprenticeship levy.

Hydes’ endorsement follows recent government announcements aimed at simplifying the apprenticeship system. Hydes believes these changes provide the stability necessary to foster homegrown talent. Since introducing a new bonus incentive scheme mid-last year, Hydes has seen a boost in engagement; the number of employees in the programme has risen from six to 11, all of whom are now working toward formal qualifications.

Hayley Cox, talent business partner at Hydes, personifies the power of this vocational path. Having originally joined the hospitality sector as a kitchen porter and then bar staff, Hayley completed a Level 3 Hospitality Supervision apprenticeship with her original employer, progressing to pub supervisory and general manager roles. This eventually led her into her current senior leadership role in the HR department at Hydes’ brewery premises in Salford.

Other successes include 45-year-old brewer Chris Riley, who is formalising years of experience through a Level 4 qualification, and health and safety apprentice Abby Morgan, who has transitioned from front-of-house hospitality into a critical compliance role.

Beyond internal development, Hydes is also re-thinking its recruitment processes through strategic partnerships with charities Only a Pavement Away and Pure Innovations. These collaborations support individuals who may face barriers to traditional employment. Rather than requiring candidates to apply through standard digital channels where they may struggle to progress, Hydes provides direct interview opportunities. This ensures potential is recognised through face-to-face interaction, providing a vital lifeline for those who might otherwise be overlooked by conventional hiring processes.

This inclusive approach extends to Hydes’ work with the ‘apprenticeships in custody’ initiative at HMP Risley, HMP Thorn Cross, and HMP Styal. By contributing levy funds, the brewery provides prisoners with the opportunity to gain qualifications before release, reducing the risk of reoffending. A standout success is Connor Fraser, a commis chef at the Harry Beswick in Heswall. Connor completed his training through the HMP Risley partnership and has since progressed successfully within the business, demonstrating the tangible impact of providing second chances.

The government is currently directing significant investment into the sector, with Chancellor Rachel Reeves allocating £725 million over three years. This intervention arrives at a critical time, as apprenticeship starts have plummeted by nearly 40 per cent over the last 10 years, leaving almost one million young people aged 16 to 24 currently disengaged from both employment and education. By integrating apprentices into operations, brewing, and management, Hydes aims to create a robust pipeline of specialists.
