Churchill Living has recognised the remarkable contributions of over 60s in Cumbria as part of its first-ever Local Hero Awards, celebrating inspirational individuals who are making a real difference in their communities.
Terry Peate, 70, from Cockermouth, has been crowned Cumbria’s Local Hero. Terry is the driving force behind Linking Lives, a local project that connects lonely or isolated residents with Link Friends who spend time with them each week. With over 75 volunteers now involved, Terry works tirelessly to ensure the programme runs smoothly, raising funds through regular tool sales, providing practical help to neighbours, building wildlife boxes and supporting community projects such as Silver Meadows. He is also heavily involved in his local church, helping maintain the community hall for its regular users.
Terry commented on his win: "I'm very honoured and humbled to receive this award. The £1000 donation from the Churchill Foundation will make a big difference to Linking Lives, especially as we are looking to expand our services into new locations to help even more people. I'd like to say a big thank you to Churchill and also to my colleagues at Linking Lives for all their support."

Peter Forrest, 67, from Barrow-in-Furness, was Highly Commended in the awards. Peter dedicates his time to keeping the town clean, litter-picking daily in all weather and ensuring collected waste is properly sorted and recycled. His efforts have made a tangible difference, helping maintain Barrow as a cleaner, more welcoming place for residents and visitors alike.
Spencer J McCarthy, Chairman and CEO of Churchill Living, said: "The Local Hero Awards have highlighted the incredible contributions older people are making in communities across the country. Terry and Peter exemplify how dedication, compassion, and energy can transform lives and places. We’re proud to celebrate their achievements and thank them for everything they do."
Churchill Living plans to make the Local Hero Awards an annual celebration of the UK’s over 60s who go above and beyond in their communities.
