Ooh, it’s that time of year again – oh yes it is!

This year’s York Theatre Royal production is a wonderfully creative interpretation of the classic fairy tale Sleeping Beauty, which includes flamingly fabulous antics from the Guardian of a Raptor (called Kevin) and some hilarious moments when a regiment of toy soldiers comes to life, to mention just a few imaginative additions to the storyline.

York Theatre Royal continue to work collaboratively with Evolution Productions (writer/producer Paul Hendy and producer Emily Wood), and if my young grandchildren’s reactions were anything to go by, they have hit a winning formula for fun family entertainment, including a pun-packed comedy cart routine, a super-silly slapstick routine (I was laughing as much as the youngsters at this) and the ghostie bench scene (highly anticipated and relished by my grandson), while adding in some unexpected twists too, to keep things fresh.

Robin Simpson shone in his role of Dame Nurse Nellie, bringing a sense of mirth and mischief to the proceedings, particularly when there were slip-ups, with lots of funny ad-libs from him, and a real sense of affection between him/her and sensational sidekick Jangles, played with warmth, energy and zeal by Tommy Carmichael.
Juliet Forster provided great direction, while Hayley Del Harrison contributed vibrant choreography throughout; the finale was amazing – watch out for that fast-paced, fabulous Blues Brothers routine performed by Prince Michael (Christian Mortimer) and Jangles.

Musical Director/Arranger/Drums Edwin (Ed) Gray did a fantastic job with his band, Keys Alex Faulkner and guitarist Fergus Vickers, and there was a wonderfully relaxed atmosphere, with the combination of fun times on stage, sparkling, stunning sets and costumes and a wonderful lighting design.

Aoife Kenny lit up the stage as Aurora; her fight scene with Kevin the Raptor (Fight Consultant Neil Tattersall) was a real highlight, as were Kris Madden’s fabulous fiery performances as Guardian of the Raptor – I was as rapt at the spectacle as the youngsters in the audience.
Fairy Moonbeam (Jennie Dale) and Carabosse (Jocasta Almgill) engaged in fiery stand-offs, and the audience was treated to some sensational dance numbers in Carabosse's lair.

The production was modern and highly appealing; the young audience erupted with appreciation when the principals and energetic and enthusiastic ensemble launched into Golden, a real highlight of a night filled with marvellous music.

This panto was full of cheer and fun – a sure sign that the run-up to Christmas has begun!
