Autonomous Robots Trial Last-Mile Delivery In Barnsley

Evri has launched a three-month trial of autonomous delivery robots in Barnsley, South Yorkshire, marking a significant step for the UK’s first government-backed ‘tech town’. Partnering with Delivers.AI, the parcel firm is piloting the service in the Redbrook area to explore how robotics can assist local couriers and improve consumer choice.

The electric-powered robots, standing 80cm tall, are designed to navigate pavements 24/7. Eligible residents can opt-in to receive parcels via the bots, choosing specific delivery slots and tracking the units in real-time. To ensure security, customers receive a unique SMS link to unlock the robot's lid upon arrival.

The initiative supports Evri’s target to reach net zero by 2035. Fully monitored by a remote operations team, the robots can be manually redirected if they encounter obstructions.

Marcus Hunter, Chief Technology Officer at Evri Group, said: “The robots will work alongside our couriers, supporting them in their roles while helping to increase the speed, convenience and flexibility of the services we offer.”

Councillor Robin Franklin, Cabinet spokesperson for Regeneration and Culture, added: "As the UK's first government-backed Tech Town, it's fantastic to see this type of innovation, which could become the future for home deliveries, taking place here in Barnsley."
