ONE DAY EVENTS
Luisa Omielan: God Is A Woman
Sun 24th October 07:30 PM
Fresh from a successful off-Broadway run, comedian Luisa Omielan tours the UK with her highly anticipated God Is A Woman show. “How different would the world be if women’s stories had been included more in the Bible? Did you know that Adam had a first wife before Eve? Her name was Lilith and she left Adam because she wanted to do reverse cowgirl and he would only do missionary – they didn’t mention THAT in the creation myth.” At a time of pandemics and global warming, we all turn to spirituality for hope and purpose, so let’s hear about the true meaning of Christmas, Jesus and cunnilingus, courtesy of BAFTA breakthrough act winning Luisa Omielan – now that’s a Sunday school we all would have stayed awake in! Luisa already has three ground breaking hit shows under her belt. First, she asked What Would Beyonce Do?! (sell out across the UK and Australia, is what she would do!), then she asked Am I Right Ladies?! and her thigh gap joke went viral with over 45 million views. Then she turned to politics and got a show on the BBC entitled Politics for Bitches. So the next logical step was for Luisa to bring her unique genre of comedy to religion – expect Mary Magdalene and dick jokes.

RedHanded
Wed 27th October 07:30 PM
Three years ago hosts Suruthi Bala and Hannah Maguire met at a party, they got drunk, talked murder and decided to start a true crime podcast together. Within weeks they had started recording the very first episodes of RedHanded, with a £10 microphone, locked in a cupboard under some stairs. Today, RedHanded is an internationally renowned, award-winning, hit podcast that offers a weekly dose of murder, wit and ‘WTFs’ delivered with all the facts, anecdotal tangents aplenty, serious societal scrutiny and real British flavour. Last summer RedHanded placed Silver in the coveted Listeners’ Choice category at the British Podcast Awards and was also named the #1 most popular true-crime podcast in the U.K. in 2020. The show stands out in the world of true crime by delving into the most complex and difficult of cases; always exploring the cultural, societal, political and psychological drivers of the most extreme of human behaviour.

Opera North's Carmen
Thu 28th October 07:00 PM
Love is wild This scorching new production of one of the most popular operas ever written will take you deep down into a world where desire and hot-blooded passion reign supreme… Carmen is a strong woman doing what she can to survive in a poor frontier town, manipulating and seducing the men who try to control her. But when one man’s obsession turns to wild jealousy, the consequences are shocking. Bizet’s flamenco-infused music overflows with emotion and unforgettable melodies including the Habanera and Toreador Song. Penned 150 years ago, the themes of femininity, desire, violence and toxic masculinity resonate now more than ever. Edward Dick returns to direct following his five-star Tosca that thrilled audiences in 2018.

But all that glisters… Planet LOL asks “When you realise your planet is teetering on the brink of extinction do you simply shrug and put the kettle on?” A fast-paced, funny, female-led sci-fi about facing up to reality and rewriting your endings. “Love tokens, sittings and song - Knitting sticks from the John Dixon collection”
In the exhibition the knitting sticks are cased in groups that highlight the different styles. Some, called representations, are shaped like fish, hands, legs, shoes or dogs. Others are shaped like pegs, spindles, or have intricate chains carved from a single piece of wood. There are also examples from Spain, Greece, Holland, Bavaria and France. Some are decorated with tiny glazed windows containing messages or the name of the woman who would have received it as a gift. Others have heart shapes made from bone or are inlaid with wood. They are stunning objects that tell a fascinating story. The exhibition also includes knitting dialect and visitors are encouraged to share their family words linked with knitting and crafts.

JITNEY
Jitney is firmly anchored in the 1970s. How is it relevant in 2021? ‘It’s a play about gentrification; about a place that historically belongs to a marginalised community that’s being taken over by a more affluent community. The people who originally lived there are being displaced, which, sadly, still feels quite relevant. ‘There’s also something interesting about spending time with men – especially black men – in a piece that isn’t specifically about the black experience, which seems important at the moment when we’re considering how we consume media around blackness.’

Arthur Miller's “The Crucible”
Set against the dramatic background of the 17th-century Salem witch trials, The Crucible lays bare the human struggle, both internal and external, and shows us a community galvanized by fear and suspicion, a wife betrayed by lust, an orphan girl blind with passion and obsessed with revenge, deluded holy men and ruthless prosecutors. Miller’s script exposes the destructiveness of socially sanctioned violence, the power of hysteria and rancour, the blindness of zealots, and the heart of a tortured man trying to find his own goodness.
