Yorkshire's First Single Malt Whisky Receives Three Great Taste Awards

 
The team at Yorkshire's first single malt whisky distillery are celebrating after winning three awards from the prestigious fine food and drink accreditation scheme, The Great Taste Awards.

Hunmanby based Spirit of Yorkshire Distillery entered the awards for the first time this year and were rewarded with two stars for Filey Bay Moscatel Finish and one-star awards for Filey Bay Flagship and Spirit of Yorkshire Cream Liqueur.

Awarding Spirit of Yorkshire a two-star Great Taste award for Filey Bay Moscatel Finish, the judges commented:
"It has big bold flavours and yet a beautiful balance, creating a rich, harmonious and satisfying whisky. The aftertaste is likewise full and lingering, with the sweeter and savoury notes remaining perfectly balanced. Smooth, sippable, and with a long pronounced the finish, the quality of and skill in making this blew us away."

Spirit of Yorkshire's Co-founder and MD, David Thompson said:
"Only 10% of entries into the Great Taste Awards receive a two-star award, so we are delighted to have achieved our first two-star award in addition to another two one-star awards at our first attempt. Not only are these awards a validation of our quality by industry professionals, but they represent an assurance to the customer that our whisky deserves such accolades.

"We put huge amounts of effort into growing the barley and distilling the spirit, so it's really encouraging to win these awards, and is a credit to our team after a challenging 18 months."

The Great Taste awards are organised by the Guild of Fine Food and are the largest and most trusted food and drink accreditation scheme. They support and promote food and drink producers, large and small, giving buyers and food lovers in the UK and overseas reliable recommendations for great tasting food.


Spirit of Yorkshire is one of only a handful of distilleries that grows the barley for whisky production. It is a collaboration between farmer and brewer, Tom Mellor and business partner, David Thompson.
