But when it comes to the slang that defines British culture, which words are the most favoured? A survey of 1,500 UK participants conducted by language learning platform Preply reveals just this.

According to the results, ‘knackered’ is the most popular slang word in British culture, with almost two thirds of Brits (60.6%) being confident in using this word correctly in a sentence.

Surprisingly, this slang term was the most familiar and easy to use for the 55+ age group (74.25%), whilst less than half (48.14%) of 16-24-year-olds didn’t know how to use the word.

‘Tenner’, ‘cuppa’ and ‘skint’ all follow closely behind, with almost three in five Brits (59%) saying that they can use these terms correctly in a sentence.
