Tips For Practising Good Hygiene Whilst Travelling

Are you practising the best possible hygiene when you are out and about or travelling?

Keeping yourself clean and healthy whilst on the go is essential. Here experts from Vaxxy Travel give seven tips to keep you safe:

1.Wash your hands
This is obviously a given, but ensuring you wash your hands regularly even if you haven’t been to the bathroom, is essential. When you’re travelling you are exposed to a host of germs, more so than normal, so it’s important to ensure you wash your hands regularly and thoroughly using anti-bacterial soap and warm water.

2.Be self-aware
Self-awareness is key when travelling. If you have a cold then carry anti-bacterial wipes, a tissue and hand sanitizer. Use them wisely and you will prevent the spread of bacteria to other passengers. If you are due to travel then ensure you have had all the appropriate travel vaccines but sure you visit the Doctor before setting off if you feel anything less than normal.

3.Sanitize on the move
When on the move, the best thing you can do to prevent getting sick is to carry your DIY ‘keep me safe’ kit: travel size hand sanitizer, anti-bacterial wipes, anti bac sanitizing spray, face wipes and any other anti-bacterial products such as hand creams or face creams. Having all these to hand will ensure appropriate defence against any harmful bacteria. You can also squeeze hand sanitizer onto a bit of tissue and wipe down any areas near you such as the plane arm rest, tray table or any other area you are likely totouch.

4.Keep nails clean
Keeping your hand nails short and clean will prevent the build-up of dirt that might inadvertently find its way into your mouth. So, think about travelling with a small nail brush and keep those pinkies scrubbed and washed with warm water and soap!

5.Practice spatial awareness
It’s not just about keeping your own body clean; you also need to be mindful of others who are perhaps not practising their own hygiene. Try to remain aware of what you’re touching, who you are touching and who you are standing close to. If you can, try to avoid skin on skin contact with other travellers and, if someone is coughing nearby, move away from them and, where possible, wash or sanitize your hands.

6.Keep your face and body clean
If you are travelling long haul it’s really important to try and keep your face and body as clean and fresh as possible. Keep a facial wash, wet wipes and moisturiser to hand whilst in transit, and give yourself a wet wipe wash on those areas that need it, ideally morning and evening.

For cleanliness purposes, taking a spare pair of clothes and some additional underwear is always a good idea if only to keep you feeling fresh at all times.

7.Don’t share food
This is fairly obvious; however, many people forget how easily germs are transmitted in the food sharing process. Biggest culprits? Snacks such as crisps, nuts or sweets. Even shared cutlery can catch you out.

If you are travelling with a partner or friend, ensure you aren’t sharing utensils and, when alone, avoid communal snack bowls containing things like nuts or crisps. STAY SAFE!
