Sport: What's On This Week?

Autumn is well and truly here, and despite the worryingly colder days, it shouldn’t stop us from getting that bittersweet feeling of a slight chill as you watch a floodlit match.

In football, with it being the November international break, the option to sit at home in the warm and watch from afar is also on the cards. However, there are local sporting event offerings too, so if a midweek live watch is what you're after, here are a few ideas:

Tuesday 12th November: Harrogate Town AFC v Blackpool

It is the final round of the EFL Trophy group stage, where league One Blackpool are facing off against perennial overachievers in League Two Harrogate Town.

This is one for those who enjoy the familiar taste of Bovril under the floodlights. A trip to the Exercise Stadium offers a welcome mix of a friendly traditional old school vibe but with a comfortable and modern feel with the two newly redeveloped stands.

Harrogate’s league form may be on the slide, with just one win from five seeing the Sulphurites sitting in 20th place in League Two, however, Simon Weaver’s men will be hoping to earn back-to-back wins in the cup, following their recent impressive FA cup victory over League One promotion contenders Wrexham.

Only a win will do for Town who need all three points to lift them above the Tangerines in the group and secure a place in the knockout phase.

Kick-off time is 19.00 at the Exercise Stadium, Wetherby Road, Harrogate HG2 7SG with adult tickets costing £10 and students £8.

You can also watch the game on Sky Sports+

Tuesday 12th November: Guiseley AFC v Prescott Cables

Guiseley AFC have their sights set on the Pitching In Northern Premier League play-offs, sitting just outside them in 8th spot. A win against Prescott Cables on Tuesday night could be the catalyst to solidify an increasingly likely mid-season playoff push.

Their opponents, the Lions, lurk beneath the play-offs as things stand, with at least two games in hand on each team above them so there is no doubt they sit in a comfortable position heading into a busy late Autumn schedule.

A win for the hosts at Nethermoor Park would be a cracking atmosphere to get amongst for a Yorkshire club deserving of a promotion push. Winter clothing will be required.

Kick-off time is 19.45 at Nethermoor Park, Otley Road, LS20 8BT. Adult Tickets are £13.

Thursday 14th November: Greece v England

The three lions kick off the final week of the Nations League Group B with a visit to leaders Greece this Thursday.

It is the penultimate match of both the group and Lee Carsley’s reign as caretaker boss, before the much anticipated Thomas Tuchel era begins next year.

Redemption will no doubt be the message from Carsley and his staff, with the recent Wembley defeat at the hands of the Greeks fresh in the memory, being the first time England lost a competitive fixture at the famous stadium since 2020.

Victory in Athens is necessary to boost England up to frontrunners of the group, giving themselves more breathing room ahead of the Wembley clash v Ireland at the weekend.

Carsley named his final squad last week, with John Stones losing his place in defence where Taylor Harwood-Bellis of Southampton and Newcastle’s Lewis Hall come in for their first call-ups. Manchester United duo Kobe Mainoo and Luke Shaw miss out with injury. Jack Grealish does remain with the squad despite recent injury trouble, much to the frustration of Manchester City boss, Pep Guardiola.

Full coverage of the match will be on ITV/ITVX.

All Week: Lionesses of Hull exhibit

Hull’s Streetlife Museum of Transport is hosting a unique look into the stories of two local pioneers in women’s football.

Flo Bilton and Carol Thomas are former England internationals who experienced the life of being a female England international in the 70’s and 80’s, during a very different period for the women’s game, than the one we see today.

This often forgotten part of England national team history will now be front and centre, with displays of rare memorabilia and a film with exclusive interviews outlining both stories.

The exhibition will also highlight the important work done by Bilton to create the Hull Women’s Football League, which gave girls the opportunity to play football, and has continued to produce lionesses for decades.

The museum opens at 10am each day (11am on a Sunday), with access to the exhibit free of charge. More information can be found on their website: https://www.visithull.org/to-do/streetlife-museum
