May Mini Heatwave: Staying Safe On The Roads

Met Office predicts temperatures to hit 20C this week, amid nine-day mini heatwave. Sunshine is set to continue over Jubilee bank holiday, due to a 'Spanish sizzler'.

“As the UK prepares for a mini heatwave, which is predicted to last up to nine days, there will be many people on the roads wanting to take advantage of the weather.

“With our recent survey revealing that 71% of the nation think cyclists have complete right of way – as opposed to priority - over cars on the roads, we’re further highlighting the confusion around how much priority cyclists have over cars.

‘’If you’re driving in busy traffic, ensure you give other drivers plenty of room to reduce any chances of a collision. Highway Code rules now state you must give way to pedestrians crossing at junctions and give priority to cyclists when turning into or out of a junction or changing direction or lane. Failure to do so could result in a fine or even worse, an accident.

“It may also be tempting to wear flip flops in the warm weather, but they can increase braking time and potentially increase the chances of an accident. Be sure to drive in sensible and comfortable footwear to avoid causing harm to yourself, other passengers and road users.

“To ensure everyone has a safe journey, and to reduce the potential risk of a road accident, its important you drive sensibly and familiarise yourself with the Highway Code rules. They provide important guidance when determining who is at fault for an accident.”
