London Zoo Reveals Stunning Images Of Asiatic Lions For World Lion Day

ZSL London Zoo is celebrating its big cats and their biggest supporters on World Lion Day (Wednesday 10 August) by releasing a series of stunning images taken of the Zoo’s two Asiatic Lions.

The images - captured by renowned wildlife photographer, Matthew Maran - show never-before-seen views of the Zoo’s two majestic cats in their Land of the Lions home.

ZSL London Zoo lion keeper Tara Humphrey said: “Our two Asiatic lions Bhanu and Arya are incredible animals, you can see this from the detailing in these extraordinary images which show their long whiskers, powerful retractable claws, long sharp canine teeth and of course Bhanu’s large distinctive mane.

“Part of an international conservation breeding programme, Arya and Bhanu play an important role in the preservation of this endangered species. Although Asiatic lions numbers have grown in recent years there are still only 600 left in the wild.

“As a global conservation charity, the support of corporate partners such as Liontrust makes a huge difference to our work, and we’re delighted to celebrate them and our beautiful big cats this World Lion Day.”

With Liontrust’s support, ZSL aims to tackle the challenges these big cats face. Corporate partners such as Liontrust enable ZSL to care for Asiatic lions like Arya and Bhanu, and support partners in India to safeguard these big cats in their last remaining wild habitat, the Gir Forest. In return ZSL’s corporate partners display their commitment to sustainability, conservation and education.
