Letter To The Editor From The Directors Of Wild Justice

Dear Editor,

The red grouse shooting season is upon us and more questions are being asked of, and fingers pointed at, this hobby than ever before. Gone are the days when driven grouse shooting was seen as a pastime for the rich that was nobody else’s business.

In Scotland the government is moving to license grouse shooting because of its damaging impacts on greenhouse gas emissions, protected wildlife and the natural beauty of the hills.

Here in England, even a Conservative government has introduced measures, terribly weak ones (which we aim to challenge in the courts), to limit moorland burning because of its damage to habitats and carbon stores in peat soils.

The future for our hills, especially in National Parks, is not killing, burning and crimes against protected wildlife but tourism, carbon sequestration and richer wildlife communities.
