Interview With SKAAR - The Next Big Pop Artist From Norway

Norway’s next breaking alt-pop artist is 22-year-old SKAAR, whose first five singles have all been A-listed at radio in Norway, including her debut track ‘Higher Ground’ which has now exceeded 11 million streams at Spotify.

SKAAR now makes the biggest statement of her blossoming career by sharing her debut EP ‘The Other Side Of Waiting’, which opens with her brand new single ‘Turn of the Tide’.

An alluring fusion of luscious vocals, addictive hooks and unbridled positivity, ‘Turn of the Tide’ provides an irresistible introduction to the EP. The song has taken on a new power in the current situation, as it offers a beacon of hope that there are better times ahead.

I asked SKAAR about the new EP and why there are so few artists coming from Norway.

Tell us about your new EP

The EP is a story from after I moved from Stord (the little island where I grew up) to Oslo. And ever since I was little I’ve been waiting and dreaming of doing music full time, and now it’s finally happening! So 'The Other Side of Waiting' (the name of the EP) is about situations happening in my life after I started living my dream!

There are not that many famous pop acts coming from Norway other than A-Ha, why do you think that is?

Well, I think that’s about to change! Maybe because the world is finally opening up their eyes to amazing female artists from Norway? I think Sigrid is starting to get huge, and Aurora is also a big name out there. And of course, I hope to be one of those big acts sometime too!

Have you ever been to England?

Yes, but only one time! I was in London two years ago, but only for a few days. It was amazing!!! Wow, I wanna go back!

Who were your influences growing up?

My biggest influences growing up were Coldplay, Foo Fighters, Florence + the machine, Banks and Bon Iver. It is a weird mix, I know! But to me it makes all the sense in the world. A new artist I’ve been listening to is a guy called Still Woozy!! Damn he’s cool!

Have you met any famous pop stars yet?

Sigrid and Aurora! They are both soooo cool and nice. Hope to see them again soon!

Besides singing what other career do you think you would have followed?

I really love music, so I would probably be in the business in some way. Maybe an A&R or a booking agent? I could also see myself as a nurse, I love working with people!

Which season is your favourite one?

Caaaant choose! Every season gives me something new and special. I am always looking forward to every season!

On the EP, Pearls is about panic attacks and anxiety, have you ever had any of these?

Yes I have! It is weird to talk about cause it’s so personal. I sometimes go through panic attacks when I’m very stressed out or very sad. It’s a really scary feeling, and that’s what I wanted to write about in Pearls!
