Interview With Nicola Sirkis

Nicola Sirkis is the frontman of the prolific French rock group Indochine. With 13 studio albums under their belt, they have just released the sensational Nos célébrations as the lead single from their forthcoming career celebrating collection. We caught up with Nicola to learn a little bit more about the upcoming record and to take a look back at the last 40 years of his recording career.

Tell us about the upcoming celebration record… How do you feel when releasing a new record?

This is the first time we have written a song on its own I mean without a complete album project.

I'm always worried when a new record is released.

What inspired the record?

My 40 years of life within the band and going through all the different changes that happened in the world.

Tell us a little about your creative process...

Things are very simple to be honest: when we arrive at the studio for a session, we just get going and let it go naturally and improvise as we go along, this is why it is always so magical when we go into a studio. It is just so natural for us to put a song together.

If the record were an animal, what animal would it be?

I would say a bird, more specifically a seagull as I love the idea of them having complete freedom to travel when and where they like.

Define your sound in five words…

Let’s say: dream, pop, rock, energetic, emotional.

What was the first song that caught your attention?

No doubt, Diamond Dogs by David Bowie.

What was the first song you bought?

The first one was 'Poupée de cire, poupée de son' by France Gall, one of our greatest female French singers.

And the first album?

Aladdin Sane by David Bowie.

What was the best concert you have ever seen?

Prince and his “love sexy tour” in Paris.

What did the experience teach you that you have translated to your own shows?

Never stop, No breaks, always up to date, always looking ahead of the next tour and new technologies.

What other artist are you most excited to hear from?

Patti Smith. I'm a huge fan.

If you could work with them, what would you hope to record?

The most beautiful love song.

If you had to pick three artists to be filed next to, who would they be and why?

The Cure, Depeche Mode and U2 ... all are considered as the survivors of the 80s.

If you could jam with one artist alive or dead, who would it be?

John Lennon

If you could have written one song by another artist, what would it be?

Heroes by David Bowie

Someone is making a film of your life, who will play you?

Timothee Chalamet
