Desperate Plea From North Yorkshire Moors Railway

North Yorkshire Moors Railway (NYMR) has launched a crisis appeal to secure its future, just days after announcing a delay in the opening of its 2020 season.

The popular tourist attraction, first formed in 1967, is struggling to cope with the effects of COVID-19, currently sweeping the country.

Now the line, which has played a vital role in providing an authentic evocation of the steam age for thousands of people, whilst also preserving the past and protecting the legacy of steam travel for future generations, is fighting for its own life.

Chris Price, General Manager at NYMR, widely regarded as one of the country’s leading heritage railways, said: “We’re launching this plea for help as we need a fighting chance to keep the railway going.

“The NYMR is unable to claim insurance compensation for business interruption and as the situation currently stands, monetary aid has not been offered to charities.
"The only government help available at present would put the railway into significant debt, which could take years to pay off.

“We could potentially lose up to £1 million over the coming weeks, and figures of this magnitude could threaten the very existence of the railway, which is why we’re asking, no, pleading, for help from members of the public.

“We want to continue with the incredible restoration and preservation work the whole team here has been doing for decades and hopefully will be for many more years to come. But it’s imperative we don’t run out of steam.”

Recently the railways cancelled the following events:
Volunteer Recruitment Day: 19 April
Wedding Fair: 3 May
Diesel Gala: 4, 5 & 6 June
Behind the Scenes: 6 & 7 June
60s Fest: 4 & 5 July

NYMR is a registered charity and relies heavily on donations and ticket bookings in order to operate.

Anyone with a pre-booked ticket is being urged to move the booking to later in the 2020 season where possible.

“We can also refund your booking by Gift Card to use at a later date. Alternatively, we are happy to move your date of travel/event, to the 2021 season and honour 2020 prices where possible. For refunds on pre-booked tickets full T&Cs are applicable.

“When contacting our Customer Service Team, please quote your booking reference. Contact info@nymr.co.uk or telephone 01751 472508 (Monday to Friday 09:00 – 16:30).

“Please rest assured that we’re closely monitoring the situation and will of course post any updates or changes to these plans across our social channels, and on our website - nymr.co.uk
