An Exceptional Chilean Wine

Wine correspondent Nathan Lane has discovered a Chilean red that he hopes will appeal to a new audience.

Coyam 2020, Emiliana – Colchagua Valley, Chile.

Some people dogmatically only drink European wine, and others won’t touch a blend. In the ever-evolving world of wine, it’s good to be open to new wines and experiences from around the world. In this case, the wine is a complex blend from Chile that is made to biodynamic standards.

Coyam 2020 is Emiliana’s iconic organic blend, a richly structured wine with lots to offer the curious drinker.

Emiliana has been at the forefront of organic and biodynamic winemaking since 1998, managing nearly 1,000 hectares of prime vineyard sites across Chile, including Casablanca, Maipo, Cachapoal, Colchagua, and Bío Bío.

The winery’s commitment to sustainability is impressive. Emiliana is the first Chilean company to receive Regenerative Organic Certification, the highest global standard for sustainable agriculture, focusing on soil health, animal welfare, and social responsibility.

It further strengthened its sustainability efforts by achieving B Corp Certification, highlighting its environmental and ethical leadership. Emiliana is also the world’s largest organic winery, with all its properties certified organic and biodynamic. Additionally, all its wines carry Vegan Society certification, ensuring they are produced without animal-derived products.

At its heart, Coyam 2020 reflects this dedication to craftsmanship. One of the first Chilean blends to champion Carmenère, it is a wine of depth and balance. The nose is intensely aromatic, revealing ripe morello cherries and bramble fruit, layered with leather, rosemary, and subtle herbal notes.

The palate is full and rounded, delivering layers of dark fruit and a warm. There are hints of vanilla and sweet spice that add warmth and complexity. Well-integrated tannins provide structure, while subtle mint and minerality add dimension. While not particularly long, the finish is clean and expressive, showing character and personality.

Coyam 2020 will pair well with red meats, fresh cheeses, pasta with spicy sauces, and dishes featuring dried fruits or earthy herbs like rosemary and thyme.

It is an exceptional wine from one of Chile’s most forward-thinking producers and great value for the quality of the product.

Available from Latitude wine for £23.99.
