A585 Junction Upgrade Closure Extended

The current phase of Highways England’s project to transform one of the busiest junctions along the A585 in Lancashire will now be completed in March.

The major improvement to the five ‘arm’ roundabout at Norcross includes constructing a new roundabout island, adding traffic lights and improving crossing points for cyclists and pedestrians. The new arrangements will reduce congestion and make it safer and fairer for everyone travelling through the junction.

Phase three of the project started on schedule in January and will now be completed on Friday 6 March, two weeks later than planned. The delay means other aspects of the project including the last phase to enlarge the roundabout itself. The project will now be completed at the end of April rather than at the end of March.

The delay has been caused by a combination of poor weather, unexpected ground conditions such as the discovery of old utility pipes and adjustment to traffic management arrangements caused by some road users driving through the roadworks, especially overnight.

As well as the continued closure of Norcross Lane, some overnight closures of both sections of Fleetwood Road South are continuing. The A585 will remain open to drivers at all times but with occasional temporary overnight traffic lights in place to manage traffic past the roadworks at the roundabout.

The dates of planned round-the-clock closures of Fleetwood Road South (both north and south of the roundabout) as well as Norcross Lane for finishing works have also been adjusted due to the project delay.

The revised schedule is as follows:

Fleetwood Road South (northern section) Friday 6 March to Wednesday 18 March
Norcross Lane, Thursday 19 March to Friday 27 March
Fleetwood Road South (southern section) Saturday 28 March until Thursday 9 April

No work will be taking place over the Easter bank holiday between Friday 10 and Monday 13 April.
