A Bordeaux That’s A Class Act
Les Piliers de Maison Blanche is a refreshing alternative to some better-known Bordeaux wines and has a classical structure with a vibrancy that sets it apart.
Maison Blanche, situated on the southwestern slopes of Montagne-Saint-Émilion, has long been a champion of low-intervention winemaking. Certified biodynamic since 2013, the estate avoids the heavy-handed use of chemicals and instead uses natural methods. The result is a wine that offers layers of flavour with a structure that exudes winemaking expertise.
On the nose, there is an immediate sense of refinement. Aromas of wood smoke and leather mingle with dark fruit. Beneath that, hints of star anise, orange peel, and graphite add complexity without overwhelming the senses. It is a wine that unfolds gradually rather than making a loud entrance, which is always a good sign.
The palate follows suit, offering layers of plum, bramble and liquorice underpinned by firm but well-integrated tannins. A touch of tobacco and the scent of leather give it a wonderful complexity. The finish is dry and precise, tapering off in a way that suggests balance and longevity.
This one rewards patience, unlike many Bordeaux wines, which can feel engineered to impress on the first sip. It sits comfortably in its own identity, offering a depth and elegance that is all the more appealing for its restraint.
Maison Blanche has long stood apart from the Bordeaux mainstream, choosing a path that respects the land. In Les Piliers, they have crafted a wine that reflects these values. It is quietly assured, carefully structured and, above all, honest.
Available online from around £25.
