10 In 10: Shaun Drew A Director Baldwin Technical Services.

Shaun Drew is a director at Heywood-based electrical engineering and control systems manufacturer, Baldwin Technical Services. Shaun started with the company as an apprentice 22 years ago and has risen through the ranks to his current position.

He is the latest regional business professional in the hot seat as The Yorkshire and Lancashire Times gives him just 10 minutes to answer our 10 burning questions.

What does a typical working day for you involve?

There isn’t really a typical day for me, as there are so many different things that could influence how my day might turn out. At Baldwin Technical Services, we design, manufacture, install and commission new control systems, as well as providing electrical engineering installation and contracting services, primarily within the food and beverage industry. Working in the automation industry means that we as a business are always on call - the customer is our main priority.

If, for example, a customer has a system breakdown, it needs dealing with immediately, so that may mean a site visit or getting the right engineer to the customer as soon as possible. This involves providing customers with cost effective solution for various challenges. A nine-to-five day is not the norm as many of our customers have 24/7 operating hours and are based all over the world, so our support could be required at any time.

At the office there is always planning to be done for the larger projects we undertake, so it may mean a day of design, project, finance or operations meetings. I try to be as hands-on as time allows in all aspects of the business, as it gives me a better overall understanding of the tasks and pressures that face both customers and colleagues.

What makes your company special?

I would have to say the team spirit that we have. There are times when we have to work under extreme pressure and the people you work with can make all the difference. We have an established team with a wealth of knowledge and experience, who are always happy to help and be on hand when called upon.

Many of them have been with the business for years, including myself, and I think a big reason for that is the incredible culture we’ve fostered here. I started with the business 22 years ago as an apprentice and was immediately struck by the fantastic team spirit that ran through the team. That remains, to this day. Everyone helps each other, we’re all team-players, and this creates a special working bond amongst the team as we all feel responsible for each other. We are really proud of how skilled and committed our team is and continue as a business to invest significantly in our people and technologies, ensuring our capabilities and offering remains innovative and industry-leading. We have the reputation that customers respect and we build on that as we are always on hand at short notice and provide that ongoing support.

Do you have any business rules that you swear by?

I would say quality and health and safety. There is no room for error when working within an engineering and manufacturing environment. It can be challenging as there are many manufacturing processes to be aware of. The safety of all personnel is of paramount importance to me and us as a business, and we pride ourselves on delivering high quality work in a safe manner.

Do you dress up or down for work?

You’ll tend to find me in smart casual, both in the office and also typically when I’m out and about meeting customers, as it’s more practical than formal wear for the environments I often find myself in.

What piece of advice would you give your 18-year old self?

Work hard and pay attention to everything you are told. Don’t be afraid of asking a lot of questions, because you’ll learn a lot from people with experience. And don’t be worried about making mistakes. Finally, always treat people in the way you would like to be treated.

What’s your favourite Lancashire venue for an event or team away day?

A day at the races is always an interesting event. It’s nice to see the social side of your colleagues and spend relaxed time in each other’s company.

How do you prefer to travel for business?

Driving or flying.

What’s your favourite place in Lancashire or Yorkshire to relax?

I really enjoy walking, especially to Malham Cove and Ingleton Falls, with my wife Wendy and sons, Alfie and Oliver.

Where is your favourite place to eat in Lancashire, and what dish do you recommend?

Anywhere with a relaxed environment that serves great tapas get my vote!

What do you miss most about Lancashire when you’re away?

My family, friends and a good night out at the local pub.
