With Google searches for "bra sizing chart" seeing a 50% monthly increase, it's clear the nation needs some help when it comes to wearing a good fitting bra.

With this in mind, Emily Blount, Head of Product at Lounge is sharing her tips on how often we should be buying new bras, and how to make sure they fit properly.

Emily Blount says:
“The general rule of thumb is that you should be replacing your bras every six to nine months. This does depend on how much you wear your bra, how you wash it and also how your body shape fluctuates.

“Our recent poll revealed that more than four in five women currently have underwear in their drawers that they’ve had for more than two years!

“Over time, all bras will lose their shape as the elastic fibres begin to deteriorate, so it’s important to know what to look out for. The best way to know if you need a new one is to understand the basics of bra fitting."

A well-fitting bra is key to feeling comfortable and supported, these are the four key areas to look at to find the best fit:

1. Underband

This should be firm against your body and you should be able to fit two fingers around the underband comfortably. If you have too much space and find your bra is riding up, then it’s likely you need a smaller band size.

2. Straps

You should be able to slide one finger underneath your bra straps, but you shouldn’t be able to lift them up easily.

3. Wires

The wire should be sitting around your breast and it definitely shouldn’t be sitting on, or digging into, any breast tissue.

4. Cup

There shouldn’t be any gaping, and the cups definitely shouldn’t be digging in and giving you ‘double boob’.

Finally, the most obvious sign that it's time to refresh your underwear drawer, is that if your bra isn’t leaving you feeling comfortable and sexy, then it’s time for a new one!
